Apologies for both the ridiculous amount of photographs and the disgustingly obvious title; I just couldn't help myself. ;)
Last week I visited Highgate Cemetery, a stunning grade 1 listed, 37 acre cemetery situated in North London (notable "residents" including Karl Marx, Douglas Adams and JEREMY BEADLE) and despite it being a huge, crumbling Victorian graveyard filled with over 170,000 people in around 53,000 graves (cheers, Wikipedia) the place is not as morbid as one may assume.
Though I admit I did visit on a rather bright and sunny day...
The Cemetery was opened in 1839 and despite being operated and maintained by the non-profit organisation 'Friends of Highgate' it hasn't been touched much at all, giving it an overgrown, almost abandoned look; a magnificent maze of ivy-covered headstones, willowy trees, untamed shrubbery and wild flowers. The grounds are split into two parts, East and West Cemetery, and visitors are required to pay an entrance fee of either £3 or £7; £3 will allow viewing the East Cemetery unescorted, whilst £7 will get you a guided tour of the slightly older and grander West Cemetery.
Unfortunately I only managed to view the East Cemetery on my visit, but I'll definitely be rectifying this soon; I think cemeteries may be my new favourite place.

P.S. I'm gutted I couldn't spot any ghosts in my photographs.
